Planting Instructions and Tips for First-Year Care for Trees and Shrubs
PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS
Choose a location to plant your tree(s) or shrub(s). One of the first steps in
planting trees and shrubs is considering your location. Choose your site so
tree and shrubs will have room to grow. Also remember that certain plants
like different amount of sunlight. For example, yews will stand heavy shade
and some plants will do better on the north, south, east or west side of house..
Dig a hole about 4 inches wider than the “ball” of the plant. (Note: The “ball” is
the root system wrapped in burlap or plastic nursery pot). Plan for the hole
you dig to be deep enough so that when you place the ball in the hole, the
ball is about 1-2 inches below ground level. Digging the hole in this way will
allow room for loose dirt to be packed around the plant without destroying the
ball and root system.
If the plant is in plastic nursery pot, gently pull the plant out of the container. If
the plant is wrapped with burlap, do not remove the plant from the burlap or
the wire, cut the twine after the plant is placed in the hole. (The wire and
burlap will designate).
If the plant is in a plastic nursery pot, loosen any roots that are wrapped
around or encircling the plant. Unwinding the roots will keep the roots from
choking the plant or stunting its growth in the future. Do not destroy the root
system in this process.
Use some potting soil or good loose dirt to pack the plant into the hole. Note:
Do not put fertilizer in the hole. This will kill the plant.
Place the plant into the hole.
Fill space around plant in the hole with water and soil to form a mud mixture,
(mudding in). Continue to”mud in” until you have reached ground level. This
will eliminate air pockets.
Form a small dike around the perimeter of the hole. This will keep the water
from running off.
Soak the area fully.
TIPS FOR THE FIRST YEAR
Your plant will need special care for the first year in order to survive.
Check the ground moisture frequently. The plant should remain moist
throughout the first growing season. Water the plant frequently as needed.
Slow-released fertilizer works well during the first year. Use sparingly and let
the rain/water wash it in. CAUTION: Too much fertilizer will kill the plant.
Evergreens do not go dormant, therefore, water periodically during the winter
(even if the ground is frozen) evergreens will need to be kept moist the entire
winter.
Freshly dug plants that are not container-grown will require extra care.

Tips for Planting and Care of Roses
TIPS FOR PLANTING
When choosing a location for your plants, remember that roses require at
lease ½ day of sunlight. Full sun is best.
Use a good rich soil for planting your roses. Roses like a lot of humus
(decomposed organic material) in the soil. .
Dig the hole larger than the plant. Use extra peat and top soil to fill in around
the plant.
For fertilizer, use a systemic rose product lightly, and then use cow manure on
top. Let the fertilizer gradually wash in from the rain or watering.
You will also need to apply a fungicide on the plant about every two weeks.
Boxed roses generally have specific planting instructions on the box.
TIPS FOR WINTER CARE
Dirt or peat is excellent protection for the plant during cold weather.
If possible, dig up some dirt around the plant to use for your mulch for “hilling
up”. Do this when the plant goes dormant in the fall. (This is usually around
November 1st).
Mound up dirt around the plant about 18” high. (Hilling up)
Pull mulch away in the spring.
It is best to trim in the spring, rather than in the fall.
Many other things will work but, just remember, protection in the winter will
save the plant for the next year.
